Lithuania switches on power plant's Unit 9 amid colder weather
In a message to the Nord Pool power exchange, LEG said that
the unit had been put back online after the average electricity price jumped to
36.81 euros per kilowatt-hour in Lithuania. Last week, the price was under 30
euros.
The unit is expected to be online until 1 a.m. on Thursday
at the average capacity of 334 MW, with the possibility to keep it switched on
for a few days due to cold weather.
LEG said that most cities had closed the centralized heating
season, therefore, people use local heaters during the unusually cold period. Similar
weather is reported in the neighboring countries, as well, output of wind power
plants in Scandinavia remains low and the amount of energy generated by
hydro-electric power plants is declining. Furthermore, the prices will continue
rising due to the repairs of Finland's Olkiluoto 2 nuclear power plant started
on Wednesday and planned closure of Kaliningrad's TEC for repairs this Sunday.
