Apex: Expect to hear Shearon Harris siren test Monday

The Shearon Harris nuclear plant will test its sirens in Apex on Saturday morning after a false alarm a day earlier.

APEX, N.C. — The Shearon Harris nuclear plant in New Hill will test one of its emergency sirens Monday at about 2 p.m., a plant spokesman said.

The test is in response to a false alarm Friday that sounded from the plant, raising concerns on social media and among those within hearing distance. It took almost 40 minutes Friday for an official statement from Duke Energy, which runs the plant, that contained little by way of explanation.

The alarms at the Wake County nuclear power plant came almost a week after an accidental text message from Hawaii's Emergency Management Agency to Hawaiian residents and vacationers prompted them to prepare for an incoming ballistic missile.

The siren test Monday will be audible for about five seconds in the area of U.S. Highway 1 and Highway 540 in Apex.
