OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station will be performing a test of its public notification system Tuesday, June 5, at 1 p.m.

The test will involve sounding 40 sirens in the 10-mile radius of the power plant for three to five minutes.

Additional single-siren tests may be conducted throughout the day according to the power plant.

Exelon Generation said the siren system is tested on a monthly and bi-annual basis to ensure public safety.

The company warns that no public response is necessary, as the sirens are only being tested. In the event of an emergency, sirens would alert the public to tune in to a local Emergency Alert System radio, or their local media station for more information.

The Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station is a dual-unit nuclear power facility, producing enough electricity to power nearly two million homes.
