Chasi Asks Zimbabweans How Power Can Be Saved; Here Are The Reactions

Newly-appointed Minister of Energy and Power Development, Fortune Chasi, is soliciting for advice from Zimbabweans on what should be done to conserve energy and limit load shedding.

Addressing his followers on Twitter on Friday morning, Chasi wrote:

A key part of our strategy as a country must be to conserve power! What can we do differently to avoid or limit load shedding? Your ideas, please.

Below are some of the responses to Minister Chasi’s request:

Investing in solar, licensing other private firms in power generation… On another note what happened to ethanol project (heard it produced electricity which can supply Manicaland alone). Kumbi T.

Rather as gvt focus on providing a spinning reserve for grid stability, that is necessary (the big revolving generators). Yes, solar is good but harmonics will push for the need of costly high tech be aware, rather have IPPs provide that and motivate net metering. ThinkingOutLoud

To encourage solar, subsidise equipment for an immediate limited period. Ban electric geysers and make gas geysers affordable. JudyZim

Let us invest in solar energy both government and individuals.street light must be solar powered. What happened to the Gwanda solar project was a coward. Reggie

Network smart grid technologies and practices. In short, the RNM helps the regulator “peer into the future,” reducing both information asymmetry and systemic uncertainty. Second, a menu of profit-sharing regulatory contracts creates strong incentives for utilities to pursue. Michael P M Mhlanga.

Reduce or scrap off duty on solar geysers, gas stoves, solar lamps etc. If you want to protect local industries (which are struggling or none existent anyway), ensure their products are affordable but they stay in business. Mthokozisi Ndebele

Large customers should have high power factor requirement 0.97 min. Encourage the use of LED lights as opposed to incandescent. Differential pricing at peak load times on the prepaid system. Pumping systems should use variable speed drives… Gerald Mataka

Considering we do have large uranium deposits, you can also try Nuclear Power. Strictly for power supply. KingFisher

Give tax incentives to Companies that build solar energy systems to power their plants or are powered by solar. We as a country need the technology to build solar panels and equipment. Let Zim be a production hub for solar. This will remove the stranglehold that ZESA has on Zim. The CEO Zimbabwe

Please tell your colleagues to pay bills…guys from Zanu owes this nation a lot. Then we start investing in green energy! Push Chivhayo to implement the solar project! Kunic
