Wilmington will see the commissioning of the USS Delaware submarine on April 4.
Gov. John Carney announced the date this week at the annual dinner of the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce.
USS Delaware is the 18th Virginia Class submarine. The crew of 136 will serve aboard the seventh naval warship named after the first state.
The submarine is longer than a football field, with a nuclear reactor. It will carry torpedoes or cruise missiles. The cost of the submarine is believed to be around $2 billion.
A website with a place for donations has been set up for the commissioning which could be attended by as many as 5,000. The website will announce further details as they become available.
The submarine was built in Hampton Roads, VA and is currently undergoing sea trials. Click here for a link to an earlier story.
