Grand Island, Neb. — Congressman Adrian Smith expressed his support for President Trump's trade agenda, despite concerns from farmers about the potential impact of tariffs.

Nebraska's Third Congressional District, a leading agricultural region, could be significantly affected by a trade war, as much of its crop and livestock production is exported.

"I'm not a fan of tariffs. I believe history shows us they increase the cost of products," Smith said. "I understand they need to be a tool in the toolbox."

Smith emphasized the importance of pairing tariffs with aggressive trade deals. "Trump is going to drive a hard bargain and I'm comfortable with the fact the president wants to do well by farmers and ranchers. I respect that. I want to be vigilant along the way to make sure we're moving trade policies along appropriately," he said.

During the last trade war with China, the Trump administration provided financial aid to farmers, which some referred to as a "farmer bailout." Corn growers welcomed increased trade with Canada and Mexico, countries that President Trump has put on notice.

Farmer Michael Dibber expressed concern about maintaining relationships with these nations. "That's very concerning that they've been true friends and we need to keep that relationship going," he told NTV earlier this week.

During a US Chamber event in Grand Island, Smith also addressed the issue of government spending, noting the scrutiny of Elon Musk and the DOGE team.

"It's important discretionary spending items we see being scrutinized heavily probably the most in history. It's appropriate because bureaucracy has grown and grown and grown with no pushback," he said.

Smith anticipates that Elon Musk's DOGE initiative will lead to legislation aimed at spending cuts.

He acknowledged that while some Nebraskans are concerned, the president's actions align with his campaign promises.

"There are some folks who are concerned and I appreciate that, but I think the aggressiveness is what the president campaigned on as a candidate and he’s making good on what he promised," Smith said.
