DURHAM, N.C. — Vanderbilt women's basketball overcame a 19-point deficit to force overtime in its March Madness first-round game against Oregon, but the Commodores couldn't overcome three players fouling out and fell, 77-73, ending their season.

Things didn't get off to a good start, though, as Oregon took a 36-25 lead into halftime. Vanderbilt shot just 30% in the first half and got called for 12 fouls, while Oregon shot 55% and out-rebounded the Commodores, 19-11. Vanderbilt did force 11 first-half turnovers.

Seemingly every time the Commodores tried to narrow the lead, the Ducks responded with a big shot on the other end and Vanderbilt trailed by as many as 19 points in the third quarter. But Vanderbilt went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to five points.

Then, the Commodores went on another 8-0 run to cut the deficit to one. After a foul, Deja Kelly made 1-for-2 at the line. Vanderbilt turned it over on the ensuing possession but Sofia Bell missed both free throws.

Leilani Kapinus hit a layup with four seconds to go and the Commodores got a stop on the other end to send the game to overtime.

The teams traded shots for the first few minutes of overtime. Mikayla Blakes fouled out with less than a minute to go after scoring 26 points with five rebounds. Khamil Pierre and Leilani Kapinus also fouled out of the game.

Oregon went on a 13-1 run late in the second half with Khamil Pierre in foul trouble.

After Pierre picked up two early fouls in the first quarter, she sat for part of the second quarter. She provided Vanderbilt with an offensive spark when she came back in with two quick buckets but she was called for a charge with 5:05 to go in the second quarter for her third. Oregon leads, 21-17.

End of first quarter: Free throws give Oregon the 12-9 lead

Vanderbilt didn't score for the last 4:01 of the first quarter and Khamil Pierre picked up her second foul. The Ducks, who were in the bonus, made four late free throws to take a 12-9 lead out of the break.

Vanderbilt vs Oregon preview

Vanderbilt: Vanderbilt has the only pair of teammates in the country to average 20 points per game in Blakes and Pierre. The Commodores' marquee wins were two over Tennessee, one at home and one in the SEC tournament, plus a road win at Alabama. However, that win over the Crimson Tide was Vanderbilt's only win against a team that finished above it in the SEC standings. Lacking much of a post presence, the Commodores have struggled against teams that play with a lot of physicality.

Oregon: After missing the NCAA tournament a year ago, the Ducks returned just two regular starters. They returned Peyton Scott from injury and then loaded up on transfers, most notably Deja Kelly from North Carolina. The Ducks have been one of the country's better defensive teams but they struggle on offense and don't have a prolific scoring option like Vanderbilt does.
