New data shows that over the past six months, thousands of people simply don't show up to court in Multnomah County.

This nationwide trend can also be seen in Portland.

In just two years, the number of car thefts in the city has been cut in half.

In 2022, FOX 12 Investigates reported over 10,000 car thefts in the city, the highest reported since Portland Police started their ‘Stolen Crime’ dashboard.

Two years later, car thefts have dropped to just over 5,000 in 2024.

“It’s a great indication of what we can do when we have proper funding, proper staffing, and an opportunity to address crime directly”, said Portland Police Chief Bob Day.

Last year also marks the first time the city has returned to pre-pandemic levels of car theft.
