New Initiative to Tackle Unsolved Cases
The West Virginia State Police (WVSP) has announced a partnership with the Monongalia County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and the FBI to launch a dedicated task force focused on solving violent crimes and long-standing cold cases. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address the increasing number of unsolved investigations across the state.
Mission and Objectives
The newly formed West Virginia State Police Violent Crime Task Force (VCTF) is committed to investigating, arresting, and prosecuting individuals involved in violent crimes that have remained unresolved. Officials emphasized that the creation of this task force is essential to improving public safety, ensuring justice for victims, and holding offenders accountable.

Collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies
To enhance its investigative capabilities, the VCTF will work closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. It will also collaborate with the WVSP Forensic Laboratory, Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Coordinators, SAKI Investigators, and the West Virginia Intelligence Exchange (WVIX). This multi-agency approach aims to improve efficiency in solving complex cases that may have been overlooked or stalled due to limited resources.
Strengthening Criminal Investigations
By utilizing advanced forensic techniques, intelligence sharing, and inter-agency cooperation, the VCTF hopes to resolve cold cases that have remained unsolved for years. Officials believe that this initiative will not only lead to the prosecution of violent offenders but also bring much-needed closure to families who have been waiting for answers. The task force’s work is expected to make a lasting impact on the state’s criminal justice system by improving investigative processes and ensuring that violent crimes do not go unpunished.
