Photos from 1979 Three Mile Island nuclear accident show region’s reaction

On March 28, 1979, 46 years ago tomorrow, malfunctions and human errors set off what the Nuclear Regulatory Commission called “the most serious accident in U.S. commercial nuclear power plant operating history” at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Londonderry Township.

TMI reopened after the partial meltdown, but shut down in 2019. However, the plant is expected to reopen by 2028. The $1.6 billion restart plans are on track to create the Crane Clean Energy Center, providing electricity for a Microsoft data center.
