Data center operator CyrusOne is developing a second data center in Milan, Italy.
The KKR-owned company this week announced plans to build its second data center in Milan, named MIL2.
The firm has acquired a 19.68-acre site located across two municipalities - Milan and Segrate - and four miles east of the city center, close to Linate Airport.
The three-story facility will deliver 54MW of IT capacity across 18,000 sqm (193,750 sq ft) of technical space - spanning six 9MW data halls. It will be located less than 2km from the company's MIL1 development.
CyrusOne said the data center will be built “heat reuse ready” and able to distribute heat to local third parties where demand exists.
More than 500 sqm (5,380 sq ft) of solar panels will provide power for ancillary areas and the data center. The facility will utilize a closed-loop cooling solution with free cooling when possible.
Subject to a purchase agreement, CyrusOne will transfer 8,300 sqm (89,340 sq ft) of land to TERNA to support the expansion of the adjacent Lambrate substation.
The site will receive a dual active power supply of 90MVA at 220KV for the facility from 2028, which will feed both CyrusOne MIL1 and MIL2 data centers. Additional power capacity from the substation will be made available to local businesses.
CyrusOne announced plans for its debut Italian facility in Milan in December last year. The company acquired an 18.5-acre site in the Municipality of Segrate, East Milan. The three-story MIL1 will offer 27MW of IT capacity across 9,000 sqm (96,875 sq ft) of technical space.
That data center will be delivered in three phases, with the first 9MW operational by Q3 2027. The land is on the former CISE (Centro Informazioni Studi Esperienze) nuclear research campus.
CISE, founded in 1947, was an R&D center for nuclear power development. Italian energy firm Enel became CISE’s majority shareholder in the 1960s. The Segrate site was decommissioned in 2003.
Reports that CyrusOne had acquired the land in Segrate from property firm Europea 2000 surfaced earlier last year. Two buildings were reportedly planned.
