Unemployment falls among immigrants in Norway

A total of 5.5 percent of immigrants in Norway were fully unemployed in the third quarter. This is a decrease of 0.4 percentage points from the same period in 2018.

In comparison, unemployment among the general population was 1.7 percent in the third quarter. It is on the same level as last year.

The proportion of unemployed and participants in labor market initiatives was 5.8 percent among immigrant men and 7.4 percent among women. This is a decrease of 0.5 percent for men and 0.7 percent for women.

Statistics Norway’s statistics show that 1,339 fewer immigrants were registered unemployed or on measures in the third quarter of 2019, measured against the same period in 2018. A total of 31,142 immigrants are fully unemployed and participants on measures at the end of the quarter, shows Statistics Norway.

The highest unemployment rate was among immigrants from Africa, with 9.6 percent being fully unemployed. Among immigrants from Asia, unemployment was 6.2 percent. We find the lowest unemployment rate among immigrants from the Nordic countries, where 2.3 percent are registered as unemployed.
