THE PRESIDENT OF HONDURAS INAUGURATES THE LARGEST WIND FARM IN CENTRAL AMERICA, WITH MORE THAN 100 MW CAPACITY

  • Cerro de Hula built by IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA and Gamesa
  • With an investment of $200 million, the new renewable energy infrastructure, powered by 2 MW G87 wind turbines, will increase installed wind capacity in Honduras by 10%

The President of Honduras, Porfirio Lobo, today inaugurated the Cerro de Hula wind farm, which is the biggest in Central America, with an installed wind capacity of 102 megawatts (MW). The new renewable energy infrastructure was built by a consortium formed by IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA and Gamesa.

The Cerro de Hula wind farm that has 51 Gamesa G87 wind turbines, each with a capacity of 2 MW, has involved an investment of $200 million and will increase installed electricity capacity in Honduras by 10%.

Chief Executive Officer of IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA Alberto Sicre and several representatives from Gamesa were among the many dignitaries attending the inauguration.

The wind farm is 24 kilometres South of Tegucigalpa in the municipalities of San Buena Ventura and Santa Ana, department of Francisco Morazán. The owner of the facility is Mesoamérica Energy, a company specialising in the development of renewable energy projects in Central America through its local subsidiary Energía Eólica de Honduras (EEH).

The installation, which reflects the country's commitment to sustainable development, will also contribute to the prosperity of the area it is sited in, being able to cover the electricity needs of large sections of the local population. The turnkey contract for the construction of the wind farm also includes a two-year maintenance contract from the day it comes on stream.

IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA, a world leader in the development of wind farms, is currently building similar installations in Spain, Mexico, United States, France, Brazil, Romania, Kenya, Bulgaria and Poland. Poland recently awarded IBERDROLA the contract for its tenth wind farm, with 82 MW installed capacity, in a contract worth €135 million.

The subsidiary, one of the IBERDROLA Group's core technological companies, specialises in the design and construction of turnkey power infrastructures in the area of nuclear power generation, renewable energies and transport and distribution networks, with a portfolio of projects in more than 30 countries worth more than €2 billion.

Gamesa is one of the world's leading technological companies in the wind power industry, with 17 years experience, more than 23,000 MW of installed capacity in some thirty countries and maintenance contracts for 15,000 MW. Over the last few years, Latin America and the Southern Cone have become strategic markets due to their growth (representing 19% of all sales at the end of September 2011). Gamesa has some thirty production centres in Europe, the United States, China, India and Brazil and an international workforce of 8,000 people.
